About the initiative

Healthier for students, lighter on the planet.

The Green Plate Initiative encourages institutions to explore nutritious, locally appropriate and environmentally responsible meal alternatives. Through practical interventions and awareness activities, students learn how everyday food choices affect their wellbeing and a more sustainable future.

The approach is gradual and inclusive. It respects local food traditions, affordability, availability and regional preferences.

How it began

Food and You 2.0

On 30 December 2023, Jan Briddhi Foundation and Samayu ran Food and You 2.0 at Paka Sariah H.S. School, Lechera. 142 students from Classes 6 to 10 discussed what they eat, how it is produced and its effect on health, animals and the planet. The response led to a meal replacement programme in schools: the Green Plate Initiative.
